I've made three log cabin afghans. They are completely addictive to knit. If you slip the first stitch of every row, picking up the stitches along the edge is easy--just one stitch per "ditch." I wouldn't let the pickups put you off.

I my self have been in love with log cabins since I first saw a pattern on line, but I haven't had the courage to take on a project like a blanket...so I stick to baby cardis. perhaps when I finaly get pg again for my own.
however, I do recoment you go to blue blog. Alison has recently completed 2 blankies and is working on a 3rd, and yes she has twins. she's made basic patterns but they look grand. I really like what she's working on now ...it's http://alison.knitsmiths.us

Zigzag ripples are classics for afghans. Go for whichever seems more fun! Or do both the Log Cabin and the Ziggy afghan - Fraternal afghans are good too! After all, picking up for straight edge stuff is a lot more pleasant than picking up stitches a neckline or garment seam.

Sabbath Salutations, luv!

hi! i just wanted to let you know i fixed the zig zag pattern you asked a question about on the blog. your hunch was right. here's a link to it...you'll see that it's now fixed to say "pass the marker": http://bitsandbobbins.com/journal/2007/03/18/zigzagged/

i think i was thinking PM (place marker) when i actually was thinking "pass marker"...and accidentally wrote them as the same thing. sorry about that!

I think the zigzag scarf pattern would look lovely as a blanket, in both colourways you have chosen. It's more unusual than the log cabin blanket.
Love the ear warmers as well!
