Fourth Grade

As far as nice events that have happened on this trip, I got to relive an experience of my youth which really was something special.  In a small town called Callicoon Center there is a band…not just any band, but a band that performs every Tuesday night for the last 75 years!  When I was little (under age 12) we used to go often.

We brought the girls, despite the fact that it was after their bed time. The weather was cool, but clear.  We brought folding chairs, and got nearly front row seats. (The baby was in her stroller…)  The music started and the girls loved it!  Two out of three got up and danced a bit, and the older folks near by enjoyed the show.

Before it began, my mother pointed out my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Heinle.  She was a good teacher, who was very strict on handwriting.  I can’t say she was so successful with me, but she didn’t let us use pen until she felt our handwriting had reached it’s best.  I think that left me a few weeks of pen toward the end of the school year.  She always said that from here on out it just gets worse.  There is no doubt that she was correct.  This year she turned 75, and she still looks great, and appears to be very active.  I thought she was old when she was my teacher, but she was only 4 years old than I am now…wow!

I really hope I’m as active and together as she is when I’m 75.

Happy New Year…the calendar edition

Update: I don’t know how to get the pictures to work, so I’m changing them to links…I’ve also updated a bit of information.

Yesterday was a banner day, we received three calendars because of donations to various organizations, and the week before we received one from a store at the shuk where we buy our salads.

This one is from “Kupat HaIr.” It is a very technical calendar listing the times for candle lighting on Shabbat and Holidays, the latest time at which you can say the morning prayers.  We gave them donations in the name of a specific person…this isn’t an organization I would normally give my money to.

Merkaz HaRav yeshiva got our donation after the tragedy that happened to their students.  I have a friend whose son is studying there, so it was particularly close to home.

This one was the prettiest calendar.  It is from the Community of Hebron.  This one will probably be hung up in our home.

And finally, the shuk calendar.  It isn’t the stand we normally go to–and their coleslaw had too much mayo for my taste, but it is a nice magnetic calendar.

Happy New Year, and may this one be filled with happiness and health.

9AM Aw, Just Kidding! It’s for the Homecoming Dance! Go Rams!

Director: I’d like to announce that Albert*, our intern for the summer, is leaving to go back to school. His last day will be Friday. We are going to miss you here! [Team claps.]
Intern: Um, actually, I’ve decided not to go back to school. I’m moving to Israel.
Manager: Why are you moving to Israel? It’s not exactly a safe place to be right now.
Intern: I feel that I need to go and support my people.
Manager: But you’re not Jewish. You’re Russian.
Intern: Yes, I am Russian, and I am also Jewish. That’s what this yarmulke is for [points to head.]

Unshelved Cartoons

Unshelved is one of my favorite comics that I read online. Today’s is a particularly good example.

There have been a few authors whom I’ve felt that way about. Lots of them are the “easy reads” which make the “worry” stage even harder. Some of those authors are: Diane Mott Davidson, Faye Kellerman, and Kurt Vonnegut.
