Just to start, let me say we are all fine. While the most recent terror attack was very close to where we live our lives, we weren’t in the area at the time, and were not physically impacted by the events.

I do want to state, though that the last two attacks, have been perpetrated by “neighbors” of mine. Every day I hear the school bell from Sur Baher, and I can see their fireworks from my porch. To walk there would take me no more than a half hour, and the reason it is so long is that I would need to go down in a valley and back up the hill.

Jabel Mukaber is the next village over from Sur Baher. The guys who installed the security bars in my previous apartment were from there. The employees of my local supermarket are from there.

Should we destroy the homes of these terrorists? Is that really a deterrent? What makes someone who is gainfully employed, as both of them were, decide that it is time to “take matters into their own hands?”

The longer I live in Israel, the further to the right my politics move. When someone said that the number of dead is higher on the foreign sites because they include the terrorist, I commented that these terrorists aren’t human.

Do I want a security fence between them and us? These people are Israeli citizens…with the same rights I have. Do I have any answers…No. We just need to keep living our lives and hope we will eventually get a government that cares about us and not their own wallets and status.

Note: Although this may mean nothing, Sur Baher is very quiet this evening. No fireworks (which are very very common in the summer) or other noises.

My favorite part of the party was when they sang the song “Meachorie HaHar” (Behind the hill). In the song they sing “one, two, three” (in Hebrew). The teacher got all the kids who spoke different languages (English, Hebrew, French, Danish, German, Arabic) and each one of them said it in their language. It was beautiful. (Note, the teacher taught them the Arabic, nobody in that class speaks Arabic)

In a rare turn of events, I finally took advantage of one of the perks of my job. I went to the opening of the “Eco Cinema” movie festival. The film I wanted to see was “Medinat Zevel” (Garbage Country). It is an excellent but depressing film about the culture of garbage in Israel, and how people don’t think twice about throwing garbage everywhere.

Before the main film, there was a short called “Think” which was part of the Live Earth film competition started by Al Gore. Here it is:
